A colonoscopy is a diagnostic tool used by gastroenterologists to help see the inside of the colon. Our team of highly trained board-certified gastroenterologists at the Centers for Digestive Health in Northwest Indiana, recognizes the importance of early diagnosis for a variety of conditions.

What Is a Colonoscopy?

A colonoscopy is an examination of the inside of the large bowel, the rectum, and the anus. The examination is done with a colonoscope, which is a long, flexible tube with a light on the end that allows your doctor a clear view of the colon. Prior to the colonoscopy, the colon must be emptied to allow for an unobstructed view.

Conditions That Can Be Diagnosed With a Colonoscopy?

Ulcerative Colitis

Ulcerative colitis is a chronic inflammatory disease of the bowel. It is an abnormal immune reaction that results in inflammation and ulcers in the colon. A colonoscopy in Northwest Indiana, is the best way to get a good view of the ulcers.

Diverticulitis

Diverticulosis is when small pouches form in the colon and push through. The sacs on their own are not an issue, but when they reach the point where they cause symptoms like bleeding, inflammation, and pain, it is diverticulitis, and it needs to be diagnosed and treated. But to be sure what it is, a colonoscopy is called for.

Precancerous polyps

The most common reason that people get a colonoscopy is to be proactive with the diagnosis of colon cancer. Starting at about age 45, most people are recommended to get a baseline colonoscopy and then have one every 5 or 10 years after that. When examining the colon, the doctor is on the lookout for polyps, which may be precancerous. As part of the colonoscopy, any polyps that are found will be removed and sent to the lab to be tested.

Why Is a Colonoscopy Important?

Colon cancer is the third most common form of cancer in the United States, and it is common among both men and women. More than 100,000 new cases will be diagnosed this year, and more than 50,000 people will die from colon cancer this year. With a colonoscopy, the condition can be diagnosed before it has spread, and the rate of cure is much higher.
